The Story of the Porpoise and the Wild Hair.

Previously,  I challenged you to find and strengthen your will if you really want to change or accomplish something of value in your life. But, how do you know what is worth your efforts, how do you know what to value, what to change?

Enter the story of the tortoise and the hare. Both of these animals reside within us.

The hare is our short-term desires; our narrow-lens view of the world; our concern about everyday sludge. The hare within us keeps us on schedule; gets our kids fed, to school and to practice on time. The hare within us meets deadlines at work and strives for occupational success.  The hare within us also creates those New Year’s delusions, oops I mean resolutions. It motivates us to get into the gym or to eat fruits and vegetables for a few weeks. It goes and goes and goes. The hare can be very impressive and is certainly needed. But, he will wear down and does not possess sustainability.

The tortoise within us can be hidden. Unless you look for him, you may not even know that you have a tortoise. The tortoise is deliberate, intentional, well thought out, introspective, intuitive, and connected to your soul. Your tortoise has purpose. The hare is easy to see and hear, but the tortoise requires you to be quiet for he whispers. You have to tell the hare to shut up and sit down because you want to hear from your tortoise.

Have you ever considered the following question: What is my purpose?

This is one of the most important questions you will ever ask. Everything in your life should cascade from this answer. You think you already know the answer? Do you have a generalized idea or can you tell me specifics? I suggest you think about this question over many days and write down your thoughts. Write down ideas, make notes and changes until you feel 100% comfortable with your answer. Consider what activities and interactions give you a sense of peace, happiness and fulfillment. What do you really have a passion for?

Once you are aware of  what doesn’t align with your why, then you can work to end or amend the parts of your life that are not in alignment.

Legendary American psychic, Edgar Cayce, called it your life’s ideal. He said it is your number one thing that gets you out of bed in the morning. Not a goal, but a motivational reason for pursuing our goals. It’s our why.  What is your why? Write it down and then evaluate all of the various components of your life against your purpose (ideal or why). It’s important to recognize to what extent your work, relationships, hobbies, etc. are in tune with your purpose. When you are aware of and living with your purpose in mind, you thrive; You feel good; Everything comes with ease and your happiness can’t be shaken. You feel connected and directed.

Now go ride your hare to get things done, but be sure to listen to Mr. Tortoise!
